Sadly we lost the dance studio as a result of covid and this video is now just a memory.

The loss of this permanent space means it is not viable for us to offer week night dance classes.

However, we will be offering weekend musicality classes in 2022 in the main hall.

Find a taste of Buenos Aires in the New Forest near Southampton where people passing by often hear the sad cry of the bandoneon, the iconic sound of Argentine tango.

Sadly, the studio is now just a memory as we had to close this wonderful space at Bramshaw due to covid restrictions and a flood. When we can dance again, we will run all our events in the main hall at Bramshaw

We have a reputation for excellent teaching at all levels, but we shine at helping dancers develop a deep, expressive connection to the heart and soul of this dance - the music.

Memories of our dance studio which was closed in 2020

Pictured on the right is the main hall at Bramshaw. We no longer have our  dance studio which was closed during lockdown. Our events will continue in the main hall in 2022.

Memories of the dance studio

Our dance studio was closed in 2020 due to covid restrictions but we have many happy memories of week night classes, the very special milonga Uno and live events like this concert by Argentine singer Martin Alverado.

Background

Steve is a lifelong musician, creative artist and designer with experience in the performing arts. Debbie and Steve have worked together professionally since 1981. They started teaching Argentine tango in 2000. Their dance style and pedagogy is the result of the input and teaching of many leading Argentine tango maestros from around the world. See below.

Curriculum

The Tango UK curriculum has been developed over the last 15 years with influences from over 70 maestros from around the world. It presents the core elements of this beautiful dance as five fundamental movements to clarify and accelerate the learning process.
The curriculum sets clear goals for dancers who want to achieve a high level of dancing with a deep musical connection.

Teaching style

Our acclaimed teaching uses a lot of imagery, visual aids, live music and games toenhance the learning experience, making it engaging and fun!
We are delighted that our teaching style is popular in the UK and in Europe. Steve has taught musicality classes in Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Germany and Switzerland.

Commitment

Argentine tango has been our full time work since 2004. We left behind a career graphic design and advertising to develop one of very few dance studios in the UK dedicated exclusively to teaching Argentine tango.
We still take lessons with maestros to improve our own standard of dancing and teaching and bring world-class standard teachers to Bramshaw 5 times a year.

ART AND DANCE

Steve studied fine art at Lancaster University in the 1970s which led to a career as a graphic designer. He and Debbie ran their own design business from 1981 to 2004 before taking the path less trod and earning a living from teaching and organising tango events.

The studio at Bramshaw featured a lot of original artwork by Steve, including this portrait of the tango lyricist Enrique Santos Discépolo (27 March 1901 – 23 December 1951) . The work is a mix of gouache and pastel on canvas. The shaded areas are made up of tango songs that Discépolo wrote the lyrics for.

As an artist/designer, Steve was moved by one of Carlos Gavito's quotes on dancing tango:

"
A good dancer is one who listens to the music. We dance the music not the steps. Anyone who aspires to dance never thinks about what he is going to do. What he cares about is that he follows the music. You see, we are painters. We paint the music with our feet.
"
